Sorry I think I missed it but what was the name of surgery? Our last dane had wobblers, it was the most horrible experience. She went downhill very fast and we were told surgery was not an option for her, the vet told us little to no information on the disease other than it would make her ''wobbly'', we didn't realise it was fatal till it was too late. We don't use that vet anymore. She was put to sleep at 15 months. At the stage she was at it was probably best for her. But I want to make sure any lack of knowledge never harms the fate of any future dog we might have. It's great to see your boy is doing well

I love how he can entertain himself so easily with a ball! I wish Dex could self play more.
Back to topic, he's looking great! He moves like he's comfortable. Especially because he can swing around and have no issues with balance. So happy he continues to improve!sigpic

Goofus is our Forth (of 26) dogs to have Wobblers.
We've had so many as we rescue the majority of them and most are train wrecks when we get them.
We operate an Emergency Clinic and see many of these wonderful animals with Wobblers or Adisons.
It doesn't always have to be fatal.
Goofus has had Seven of his neck vertebra surgically modified by cutting a notch in the side of the bone and removing a pie shaped piece.
This allows the vertebra which is constricting the spinal cord to expand slightly and remove the pressure.
The results are seen in the recent vids.
I've posted vids early on this thread showing how bad his rear end control was and I"m sure your baby was pretty much the same.
If you ever get another Wobblers dog, ask to be referred to a Board certified Neurosurgeon for an evaluation. Wobblers is pretty common in Danes and there is allot more known about it nowadays.
One of our babies had one disc fixed and was home in a couple of days.
He's Seven years old now.

Sometimes I wish I lived in the US. I live in Ireland and our vet just didn't seem to have a clue at all. We only have one animal hospital in the country that specialises in serious cases that would do the operation and he wouldn't refer us. It only works by referalls. I'm not sure if there is a neuro specialist in this country Argh!sigpic

Lamenectomy is the word you were looking for. It's a portion of the vertebra that is removed so there is access to the spinal cord to clean around it and allow for inflammation reduction.sigpic

Thanks, Folks, I'm more than pleased and it doesn't matter who's dog it is, there is a kind of a joy in seeing one of these beautiful creatures beat the grim reaper, if you know what I mean.
One last thing I forgot to mention. If you look at early vid's you will notice his tail just hangs straight down. No movement to speak of.
Like it's just dead and has no direction.
Now, he uses his tail allot. Moves it all the time and holds it up when he walks.
Like it's been re connected.
Very interesting.

I know you guys are probably getting sick of this thread but I thought I'd include another video to follow up and let everyone know the Goo is continuing to improve. His gate is still a bit ataxic but what we got is more than we hoped for.
He's worn out several balls as he loves to play this game all day long. We bring him in at sunset to sleep in the house and he just collapses. Hard day at work, I guess.
